The Youth Sports Referee is responsible for officiating youth sports games for the YMCA of Glendale. The YMCA Youth Sports Referee nurtures the development of children, youth and teens by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships, and build self-reliance through the Y's values of caring, respect, responsibility and citizenship.


  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Proficient understanding of general rules of a variety of youth sports.
  3. Prior experience officiating youth sports games.
  4. Proficient oral, auditory and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults..
  5. Physical ability to lead and interact in fitness activities and perform related physical fitness skills.
  6. Certification requirements include, Referee Orientation program, CPR/AED and First Aid; Child Abuse Prevention. 


  1. Assist with equipment set up.
  2. Ensures playing area is safe before each game.
  3. Officiate games in a fair, professional manner.
  4. Encourage sportsmanship and de-emphasize winning.
  5. Communicate in a positive, nurturing manner when correcting players so they can learn from their mistakes.
  6. Maintain a safe and orderly environment. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the program participants, staff, equipment and facility.
  7. Arrives at work consistently on time, in proper uniform, and prepared to perform the essential functions of your job.
  8. Establishes and carries out good communication between parents, Supervisors, and the YMCA.
  9. Keeps supervisor informed of member comments and feedback.
  10. Remain calm under pressure. Staff are responsible for finding their own substitutes for any planned time off, ensuring that shifts are covered, and informing the Director of substitutions.
  11. Maintains a neat and orderly environment by ensuring equipment is returned to its proper location after use.
  12. Maintains awareness of changes in schedules, staffing, procedures and environment that can affect a member's YMCA experience, and leads members through the changes in an informative, supportive manner.
  13. Completes and submits accident/incident reports as needed.
  14. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
